When colouring grey hair, it’s crucial to assess the percentage of grey hair a client has. Typically, clients who are just starting to go grey have more grey hair at the front of their heads or hairline compared to the back. Here’s how to address this:
- Determine the Percentage of Grey: Use Wella’s colour swatch book to check the client’s base shade and the percentage of grey hair they have. This assessment will help you choose the appropriate colour formula.
- Mix Two Bowls of Colour: In some cases, you may need to mix two separate bowls of colour – one for the back and one for the front. For example, if a client has 50% grey hair on top and at the sides, your colour formula should consist of 50% of the client’s base shade and 50% of the chosen fashion brown shade. Mix this formula in a 1:1 ratio with a 6% developer.
- Adjust for Different Areas: If a client has 25% grey hair at the back and less grey on top or at the sides, your formula should reflect this. Mix 25% of the base shade with 75% of the desired brown shade in a 1:1 ratio with 6% developer.
- Consider Double Base for 100% Grey Hair: When dealing with clients who have 100% grey hair, you may want to consider adding double base into your chosen shade. This helps ensure the coverage and desired result.
By customizing your colour formula based on the percentage of grey hair in different areas of the client’s head, you can achieve a more balanced and natural look.
